Looking for some amazing books to read this summer?

What is your favorite book? Which book inspires you every single time you read it? (My all-time favorite is Love in the Time of Cholera.) For some it is a work of fiction. For others, it is a meaningful biography of their favorite historical figure. Whatever the case, books have the power to massively change your life.

Those that know me know I’m a bookworm.  In fact, if I’m going to be in the car for longer than 30 minutes, I bring a book.  (My husband regularly teases me about this. But this only applies if I’m the passenger.  I’m not an audio book gal!) Bonus points if the book is something I can gain knowledge from that I can use to change my life.

Blog reader, we live in a glorious time where information can be found right at our fingertips.  In the developed world, we never have a reason to wonder how something works or who a certain historical figure was or why the Planet Earth is so fascinating. Thanks to my personal favorite modern marvel- The Internet– we hardly need wonder about anything. We can find most of the answers we need, barring philosophical ones, with a few simple key strokes and the proverbial click of a mouse.

Setting goals the right way.

Lucky for us, this ease of finding information can really work to our benefit when we are setting goals for ourselves. That is the step that is oftentimes missing in people’s goal setting sessions.

We usually know:

  • WHAT we want to do
  • WHY we want to do it
  • HOW we plan to achieve it

But an often overlooked and immensely vital step is this: How do we plan to grow our hearts and minds so that we are ready to take action, and ready to accept the rewards we reap? The answer is personal development.

Why reading is beneficial

Reading has massive positive impacts on your mental health. According to The Healthy, reading books has the following benefits:

  • Reading helps the brain to work harder and better.
  • Reading energizes the brain.

It also says that how you read actually matters. Losing yourself in your favorite classic novel is going to be more beneficial than sitting and skimming a book at Target for 10 minutes.

I read these books over the past year and I fell in love with them. For a long time I struggled with self doubt and low confidence. I have been that way ever since I was a teen. Unfortunately, I was teased a lot in school, and that plus my depression led to a cocktail of low self esteem.

I think these books helped change a lot of negative thought patterns I developed as far as my own self worth, and as far as my potential for success. They made me realize that my goals are possible. Maybe not easy, but at least possible. This was a vital realization for my personal development journey. After all, before you do the hard work, you need to do some heart work!

The Four Agreements, by Don Miguel Luiz

Do you struggle relating to others? Do their motivations and actions confuse you? Are you plagued by self doubt and negativity? If so, this book is for you. Based on ancient Toltec wisdom, it talks about the 4 principles of finding peace and happiness.

The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho

Night, by Elie Wiesel

This was the first book I ever wept at as an adult. I read it in college and I have never been the same. It is a story of a young man’s life in Nazi death camps and how he kept hope in the worst of situations. The world is not the same without Elie Wiesel, and his message needs to be shared so that the past is not repeated.

The Empath’s Survival Guide, by Dr. Judith Orloff

According to Goodread, this book, “offers a practical tool set to help sensitive people develop healthy coping mechanisms in our high-stimulus world—while fully embracing the empath’s gifts of intuition, compassion, creativity, and spiritual connection.”

It has helped me better understand my sensitive nature, and taught me to protect myself from negative stimuli. It is a must read!

The Road Back to You: An Enneagram Journey to Self DIscovery, by Ian Morgan Cron and Suzanne Stabile

Are you familiar with the Enneagram? If not, suffice it to say, it is the most accurate personality test I have ever taken. This book is one to read over and over because it helped me understand a lot about the reason I am the way I am. For anyone searching for meaning and identity this year, this is a must read.
