What you can do to relieve stress TODAY

Wondering how you can fight stress?

For so long I was too. I had no idea that stress was so bad for my body. It ages you, makes you cranky, and messes with your sleep.

So, hey. I see you, mama. You’re stressed. Your kids won’t stop talking at you.  They found your chocolate drawer. And if they ask you for ONE. MORE. SNACK.

I’m right there with you. Kids are more demanding than people who don’t have them could ever realize. They constantly need something.

Diaper changes.

Food.

Water.

Attention.

Wardrobe changes.

None of these things are hard in and of themselves, but when you’re already burned out, being asked for even one more simple thing can feel like being asked the impossible.

Are you feeling stressed in your day to day life? Chances are, the answer is yes. The rate of burn out in moms is raising higher each year.

We have so many responsibilities, and so little energy. So much is expected of us, and often it feels impossible to fulfill all our obligations.

My Story 

I was there.  I am there.  Heck, I will be there for the foreseeable future. But let me back up a little…

When my oldest daughter was about 16 months old, I had just about had it, to be honest. I was super stressed, working full time at Target (trust me, it is WAY more magical to shop there). People say retail isn’t hard, but it is unimaginably hard. Dealing with people being angry at you all day is an empath’s nightmare.

To add insult to injury, I was about 20 weeks pregnant with my second daughter.  So, I was tired and I had just about enough.  Of what, you ask? Oh, you name it.  My mental health issues are a whole other blog post.

Basically, I have bipolar disorder with a side order of fatigue. (You will never catch me saying, “I am bipolar,” because I try to keep my personal identity separate from my disorder.)

What does that mean exactly?

  • I get cranky really easily, especially when I’m anxious or overwhelmed
  • I always feel tired
  • I get easily mentally fatigued after being around a ton of people
  • Adulting can be super, super hard

Looking for solutions

Then, my friend— whom I had known for several years and trusted with my life– told me I needed to try oils. Me: “Like essential oils? Like patchouli? Like that hippie crap people slather on their bodies to cure their cancer?*”

*Not claiming oils cure cancer, obviously  

Her: “But for real, just try them.  I know you’re stressed.  Try them.”

Me: *Sigh* “Alright, I guess…” *Orders some oils*

If you want to know how it turned out for me, I still use essential oils 3 years later

How did it turn out?

My mental health is way better (overall) than it has been in a long time.

Yes, I still have bad days where I feel burned out as hell, but now, I have more options. That is such an amazing luxury for someone with mental health issues!

We tend to feel like we are just cogs in the health care wheel. Like we’re products on an assembly line. 

Doctor’s appointment— diagnosis— prescription— side effects— REPEAT.

That is so draining, and frustrating, and I totally understand why a lot of people just give up. Hopefully things will get to a point in our (American, for reference) health care system to the point where all doctors are willing and trained to explore different types of options for their patients.

But for now, the burden lies on us to try something new when our normal system of care feels like it’s failing.

What you can do to relieve stress

That is why I began to explore homeopathy.  I started being more mindful of what I eat. I take LOTS of supplements.

And yes, I use essential oils.

Some that I really like for stress relief are:

  • Lavender
  • Stress Away (a nice lime, vanilla blend by Young Living)
  • Anything citrus-y
  • Anything earthy

There really are a lot of options out there, for all preferences and scent sensitivities. Just make sure you don’t buy scents with tons of toxic crap in them.

Things You Need ASAP

I’m a big fan of all natural stress out methods! Here are some of my top ideas:

  • Essential oils
  • Epsom salt baths
  • Personal development books
  • Crosswords
  • Journaling
  • Comfy blankets to make you feel secure

I think brain happy activities like crossword puzzles help serve as a distraction, and can actually improve our brain health!

Journaling is a great way to unload all your negativity from the day. You might not even realize how much you actually have!

comfortable blanket

Comfy blankets can make all the difference. For me, they are a place of safety, where I can forget all the things that are bothering me.

Are you stressed?

So, if you’re like me and you’ve had enough of stress, give more alternative methods a try. Use all the essential oils. Wrap yourself up in an amazing fleece blanket. Most importantly, try to engage your brain in ways aside from the typical mom activities.

Make the change. As you can imagine, life is still CHAOS.  But it is so much healthier and more beautiful when we’re less stressed.

  1. I feel like you wrote this for me LOL. The past couple of weeks have been so stressful. I have tried little things here and there but these are great tips. I see how they can help!

  2. I love to use lavender as well. Sometimes my daughters will want some of the lavender oil on their pillows at night. It’s great for helping them sleep.

  3. I’ve been dealing with stress my whole life and I don’t react well to it, but I’ve learned that I can’t let it affect my health anymore so I had to start finding the tools to manage it.

  4. Well, don’t even start with the kids needing something every second. Being a mom is the hardest job but the rewards are priceless. Yoga and essential oils help me realize stress anytime!

    1. If you have a diffuser, you can use a few drops that way. Or I like to sprinkle a couple drops in a cup of epsom salts. Just make sure to let it sit for a bit so it soaks in. Thanks for reading!

    My partner has Epsom salts, I’ve never used them, but might give them a try.

  8. I LOVE your list of things you need ASAP! You sound exactly like me! Nothing some essential oils, epsom salt baths and journaling under a nice comfy blanket can’t cure! I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome when I was 13-14 years old and I still struggle with it and depression and occasional anxiety. All these things are my go-to things!
